Composing Career Bootcamp

πŸ”Ž Stop Using Indeed.com to Find Work

⭐️ highlights πŸ’Ό finding work Aug 01, 2023

A common struggle I see from aspiring composers is how to go about finding work and building relationships.

Most start off the same way:

“Let me Google ‘film composer jobs’ and see what shows up. Oh, or maybe I should apply to this Indeed job posting… or should I send out a bunch of emails to directors to boost my odds?”

Here’s the truth:

None of that is good enough. ❌

You're NOT going to see the results you want by relying on websites to find the work for you.

Creative careers don’t survive unless you're willing to be creative in your strategies.

Here's the truth:

If you job-hunt the same way every other composer does, you're pitted against thousands of other equally-qualified, hard-working artists who want it at least as badly as you do.

It's not impossible, but you're not setting yourself up for very good odds. 🎲

So... what should you do instead?

To find success, you'll need to experiment, innovate, and improvise in your work pursuits to get the results you're looking for.

I've tried MANY strategies to find work over the years:

  • πŸŽ™οΈ Launched (and ended) the Tips for Working with Composers podcast
  • πŸŽ₯ Created weekly YouTube videos of my composing process
  • πŸ“© Sent hundreds of cold emails to creators and companies
  • 🀝 Attended conventions, panels, and masterclasses
  • πŸ’¬ Connected with composers over coffee meetups and Zoom calls

(Just to name a handful.)

Most things I tried didn't work.

But the few that DID work led to meaningful relationships with a small handful of clients, leading to more work via referrals.

So next time you're feeling stuck...

Don't wait for your dream project to show up on a job listing website.

Attract your dream clients by being public-facing, proactive, and DIFFERENT - even in some small way - from everyone else. 🧲

Experiment and invite creativity into the ways you look for work, how you make yourself discoverable, and how you build relationships with others.

(P.S. If you want to learn what things I tried that DID work, check out my 6-week Bootcamp, and I'll share ALL of my tools with you too!)
