πββοΈ My Leap Of Faith
May 23, 20232 months ago, I had dug myself into a hole. π³οΈ
In my eagerness to take on as much composing work as possible, I found myself:
- Working 40+ hours a week
- Accepting low pay, high revision work
- Accepting uncredited jobs just to be part of high-profile projects
I’ll be honest… I felt lost. π§
“Isn’t this what I wanted? Don’t I want to compose full-time?”
I decided to take a two-week break to regroup. I thought long and hard about what I love about my work, and what I’d come to dread.
I realized something crucial: I was working so hard in my business, that I had stopped working on my business.
So I came up with a plan… π‘
For the next 2 months, I turned down almost every job that came to me. Instead, I focused upping my video content on YouTube, building a team, and creating this newsletter.
Honestly, it was scary. Work was slow, and I had some doubts about whether or not digging into video-making and education would help my composing career.
But then something incredible happened… π«’
The work me and my team put into the videos resulted in videos getting 10k+ views, over 6,000 new subscribers, and 140% more channel viewership:
The revenue from YouTube, products/courses, and VST sponsorships made up for the work I was turning down.
And a producer recently reached out after finding me on YouTube, offering me a credited, high-paying job scoring an upcoming trailer.
I was 100% prepared to take a loss of revenue by turning down work.
But as it turns out, the time I bought back by saying "no" allowed me to re-invest into higher value projects, leading to higher return AND a happier work-life balance.
Trust your gut, and don’t be afraid to say “no”. You’ll be surprised what you’re capable of creating with the proper time, space, and energy π
