🌐 Creating a Website as a Composer

I recently had a student from the Composing Career Bootcamp ask me for tips on creating a website.

Here’s my opinion:

Social media profiles can pretty near serve as websites these days.

(Especially if it's an account you're active on and have your work on)

About 50% of clients interested in working with me reach out on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook.

But if you opt to go for a website as well, the most important thing is your Call-To-Action.

A Call-To-Action is an easy-to-find, distinct button that brings them where you want them to go.

In this case, it’ll likely be a contact form or your email.

(Pro Tip: You can create a hyperlink to your email by putting “mailto:” before your email. Example: mailto:[email protected] .)

Make it as easy as possible for people to get in touch with you—the more steps they have to take, the less likely they’ll take them.

If you go for a website, find something relatively easy to set up (I think Squarespace is great), and don't go too nuts with trying to show everything you've ever done.

Here’s the pages I recommend:

  • Bio page (2-3 short paragraphs)
  • Music page (an embed or audio player with your music and/or a couple of videos if you've scored anything
  • Contact page (a form or link to your email)

Anything else is extra, and not really necessary in the beginning.

And remember:

People will likely not be finding you from your website, but rather already be interested in working with you.

So the pressure doesn't need to be super high in terms of capturing every little project you've ever been involved in πŸ™‚
